World Environmental Day Communication to India Division Employees

World Environment Day (WED), commemorated each year on June 5, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. While WED gives us another opportunity for introspection and planning, at Coca-Cola Environment Management is a 24X7, year-round practice.

Through our actions as local citizens, we strive every day to refresh the marketplace, enrich the workplace, preserve the environment and strengthen our communities. Our approach to environment management is guided by a simple principle: We will conduct our business in ways that protect and preserve the environment.

Coca-Cola India has set up an Environment Advisory Council (EAC) to help guide the company to preserve and protect the environment. The EAC comprises of some of the leading luminaries of the country and this council advises the company in using its resources & capabilities to provide active leadership on environment related matters to its business and to the communities in which it operates.

The Company is actively pursuing the path laid by the Manifesto for Growth and working for stewardship in water management and sustainable packaging.

Water being a critical natural resource, it continues to remain our priority both within our operations as also in communities. We have executed over 220 structures in nearly 17 states across the country. The company in partnership with the community and local authorities has already restored a 400 year old step well in Rajasthan, the Sarai Bawari. Work to restore another historic Bawari, the ‘Kala Hanuman ki Bawari’ has just been completed. In many communities which lack access to potable water, especially during peak summers, our company ensures supply of water either through tankers - like in Kerala or giving access to water through its pipelines, as in Maharashtra. Most of our plants have installed rainwater harvesting systems within the premises to harvest maximum water. This World Water Day we initiated over 14 new projects across the country. This World Environment Day gives us another opportunity to launch many more projects on Water conservation and for providing access to potable water and dedicating many of the projects initiated on WWD.

Towards sustainable packaging, we have together with Indian Association of Plastic Manufacturers (IAPM), undertaken major PET Recycling initiatives in more than 100 locations across almost all major cities of India. We are now supporting a capacity of collecting PET waste and recycling of over 80% of the PET waste generated. The company has also taken several steps to create awareness about PET recycling at all levels including potential users, residential complexes, schools, colleges, traders etc. Awareness tools used include training programs, seminars, advertisements, banners, leaflets etc. A specially produced film "Abhiyan - The Movement" to spread awareness on PET recycling amongst students, is being launched. We are working to recycle 100% of PET.

In the last few months our efforts have been appreciated by important stakeholders including the Union Water Resources Minister, Environment Minister of UP, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister of Rajasthan and Chief Minister of Rajasthan. For details, please visit our website www.Coca-Colaindia.com

Our bottling units are initiating nearly 20 projects on Environment - Rain Water Harvesting, Tree plantation, Water Access etc.

On June 5 lets all once again get together and renew our pledge to preserve & protect the environment !
